Three Steps of RainWise Eligibility

The Property Is in a RainWise Eligible Area

Check the online eligibility map to find out if the property is located in a RainWise area 

The Property Is Connected to the Combined Sewer System 

Complete an eligibility form including some information about the property’s downspouts, and RainWise staff will review and confirm that the water from the roof is entering the sewer system.   

A RainWise Installation Is Feasible on the Property 

Work with a contractor to determine that a rain garden or cistern will work on the property.

What if I'm not eligible for RainWise?

You may qualify for a GSI Mini-Grant through Stewardship Partners. Available to anyone in the King County Wastewater Treatment Service Area, these grants fund green infrastructure projects including rain gardens, cisterns, depaving, green roofs, and tree/grattix boxes. Grant amounts are based on the size of your roof drainage area. The larger the area, the larger the grant. Learn more about GSI Mini-Grants on the Stewardship Partners website.

If you are already eligible for RainWise and want to add other improvements such as depaving or a green roof, you can apply for a GSI Mini-Grant in addition to your RainWise rebate.

Why am I eligible for a cistern but not a rain garden?

Not all properties can support a rain garden. If your property has poorly draining soils, a steep slope, or is in a landslide-prone area, installing a rain garden may not be safe or practical. A cistern may still help you manage stormwater at your property. Learn more about what determines rain garden eligibility (PDF) and the benefits of cisterns (PDF).
